Matthew Williamson, iconic British fashion and interior designer, signs an exclusive collection for ROOME LONDON, creating a truly interesting and unique luxury furniture set.

Like the founders of ROOME LONDON, Laura and Caroline Allnatt, Matthew Williamson also worked for a long time in fashion, before embarking on a career as an interior designer; the affinity in their professional paths makes the collaboration extraordinary and extremely close to the artistic choices between the brand and the designer. At the same time,  the uniqueness of each piece stands out in a new and original way from the London label’s collection.

Each piece of the collection is conceived and made using the same method that ROOME LONDON’s furniture is usually made with: precious printed fabrics are designed and projected then applied to the structure of the furniture. The entire production process is carried out entirely in England with great attention to quality craftsmanship and details.

Working for the collaboration, Matthew Williamson initially designed four prints as they were paintings and elevate the furniture to a work of art, perfectly embodying the core concept of the ROOME LONDON line. The prints he has created are inspired by travels, nature: many of the patterns and subjects refer to tropical flora and fauna. They are enriched with details and masterful use of colour and each design becomes one with the piece of furniture, being completely independent and self-contained, like a statue in the round.

The creative process leading to the creation of a print is divided into several steps. The idea comes from thinking about the design as a whole and in function of the product, creating a fundamental connection from the very beginning. Matthew Williamson started by imagining each piece of furniture in its context in a specific room and in its everyday use. He then moved on to sketching on paper with watercolours together with a search for reference images to frame the mood he had in mind. Then a second, more precise drawing is made by painting then a computer phase follows: the print is digitised and colours, proportions and patterns are fine-tuned.

Matthew Williamson’s exclusive collection for ROOME LONDON includes several pieces of furniture, most of which have an oak frame to which is given a dark lacquered finish to emphasize the natural beauty of the grain, making each piece unique and adding a striking contrast to the fabric elements of the design. Details such as handles, legs and edging are made with brass-lacquered steel and slight variations in the polished grain finish are normal and part of the charm and every upholstere is made by fabric or satin 40% silk and 60% cotton. Conscious of the impact on the environment,  ROOME LONDON uses FSC regulated timber and all the furniture is made to order, which prevents waste or surplus products.

The collection includes a set of circular tables, a chest of drawers, a sideboard available in different sizes and colours, a cabinet, a box, a dressing screen and a drink cabinet. Combining function and aesthetics is the main feature in Matthew Williamson’s work.
